Dear Future Delegates,
It is my privilege to serve as the Secretary General for the 3rd annual Gordon Fairweather Model United Nations Conference. As a Junior at Rothesay Netherwood School, I hope to make this conference the best one yet. Serving as our Deputy Secretary General this year will be Yihong Chen, an accomplished junior who attended debate nationals over Zoom last Spring. On behalf of the entire secretariat, I am excited to welcome you to GFMUN 2020!
We are growing up in a world vastly different to the one in 1945 when the United Nations was formed. Smartphones and computers allow us to access the culmination of human knowledge with the press of a button. With the spectacular invention of the internet, more opportunities are open to the youth than were present in any other period of human history. With social media, everyone's voice can be heard regardless of their background. Technology has improved so much so, that we can connect with the entire world in the midst of a global pandemic.
Despite this, our world still faces gargantuan problems such as climate change, prejudice, inequality and armed conflict. It is only through collaboration and insight into the perspectives of others can we hope to unravel these issues. This is the goal and central theme of GFMUN III. Together, we, the youth, will not accept the Status Quo but instead work hard to collaborate and understand. This is why we participate in Model United Nations.
GFMUN III is offering four committees this year. Our two special committees -- the Marvel Cinematic Universe Civil War and the Salem Witch Trials -- are crisis simulations. This means that decisions delegates make over the course of the committee will have an impact on the remainder of the session. Our ECOSOC and Security Council committees will be slightly more formal and aim to deliver an authentic UN experience. I hope that you will enjoy participating as much as the secretariat enjoyed creating them!
Finally, I wanted to extend my deepest gratitude to the rest of the Secretariat and our debate coach/mentor Mr. McEvoy. Without these people, this conference would not be possible. I encourage you to read all of their biographies by clicking on "The Secretariat" tab at the top of the screen.
And of course, I offer my thanks to you; the delegate. Together, we will change the world for the better one resolution at a time.
Robert Cole Gauthier
